Salter – Introduction

There are few companies with a history that stretches further back than Salter Housewares. Salter was started in the late 1700s, when Richard Salter designed a ‘pocket steelyard’ scale for industrial use. In 1825, his nephew took over at the helm and began to produce what the company is now known for: scales for the home.

Salter’s first success came when the company produced the first set of bathroom scales and a range of kitchen accessories for general sale. The company also produced the first typewriter in the UK and continued to prosper, becoming a major source of local employment within the Midlands.

Salter now boasts a market share of around 40% in the UK. Salter Housewares Ltd has now branched out, tasting success in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, the Far East and South America, and is now apart of the HoMedics Group.
