Philips Kitchen Appliances – Introduction

Philips is one of the biggest electrical companies in the world, employing over 2,500 people in the UK alone. Philips specialises in providing healthcare/lifestyle solutions and electronic consumer products for the home.

The company was founded in 1891 as a light bulb company by Frederik Philips in Eindhoven, Holland. After successfully introducing a medical x-ray tube in 1918, Philips launched a Medical Systems product division as well.

But the 1930s, the company had expanded its range again to become the world’s largest producer of radio and radio lamps, and Philips then began experimenting with televisions. Lessons learnt from the bulb and bicycle lamp manufacturing process inspired Philips to use rotating power to create the Philishave and Norelco triple-head electric razor.

Philips record of continually creating innovative and life changing equipment was proved once again when in 1963 it invented and produced the audio cassette tape, arguably changing the way the world listened to music forever. The VCR soon followed and Philips became known as a pioneering force in home entertainment. The company was also responsible for another musical revolution when it developed the Compact Disc, and invented the DVD, which was launched with Sony.
